Seeking Transparency through the Complexities of a Corn Allergy.

To Understand Corn is to Know GMO!

To Understand Corn is to Know GMO!

Ultimately, my goal in creating this blog, is to increase awareness around the vast use of corn in our food, beauty products and environmental products; and even more importantly, have it become more commonly recognized as an allergen.

Less than a year ago, when Autumn had a visit with an allergist, he explained to me (in a much more scientific way than I will relay) that due to the heavy presence of eosinophils (white blood cells that, in part, control mechanisms associated with allergies) found in her nose swab, he was led to believe the allergy was more environmental in nature than food related. What does that mean? In short, she reacts to the toxicity of genetically modified corn.

Ah. Well. That puts a different perspective on things.

GMO’s, or genetically modified organisms, have become quite the political topic. This centuries old, farming practice, historically done to crossbreed different species of plants, to produce heartier or healthier crops; has traveled a long, dark road to where we are today with genetic modification.

If you don’t know much about it yet, there is endless information on the internet about GMO’s. Most of it very controversial. Consumers are seeking transparency of GMO’s on food labels. Individual states are voting to mandate labeling since currently, there is no federal mandate. Big companies and lobbyists are shelling out millions to ensure there is no state or federal mandate anytime soon. Small farms are selling out to Big-Ag. And Monsanto is becoming a household name.

Although the fight for Americans to have informed choices through the labeling of GMO’s is still very much a tough battle; it is through the battle, by nature, that people are becoming more aware and educated. As the awareness of the severity of GM crops continues to grow, people are beginning to demand a choice.

And how much of the GMO issue has to do with corn……

Upwards to 90%! Much of the information available claims that upwards to 90% of the corn in this country is owned by Monsanto, which is genetically modified. If you’ve seen the list of all of those sneaky names of ingredients that may be derived from corn, truth is, they are most likely to be from the GM variety.

GMO’s are getting a lot of press these days. Corn is a big part of that hot topic. To really begin to gain an understanding around the many possible dangers of the overuse of corn in this country, it is important to be aware of GMO’s. There really is no separation of the subject. Where there is corn, there is GMO. Where there are GMO’s, there is bound to be adverse reaction. The way I see it, an allergy is a blessing, based on the host of other possible unhealthy GM side effects. Become educated, this issue is nothing to sneeze at!!

What’s in a LABEL?

What’s in a LABEL?

There is so much more to a ‘label’ than understanding a list of ingredients contained in a package. SO MUCH! A label, similar to a diagnosis, can also be given to a person to define a set of symptoms. It is affixed on to something to describe ‘what is inside’. A label is a belief…
