Seeking Transparency through the Complexities of a Corn Allergy.

Autumn's Mom

I can refer to myself in a few different ways, but the part of me that is inspired to put together this website of sharing stories and collected information about corn as an allergen, is Autumn’s Mom.

Although most know me as Renie Allen, it is the Mom side of me that has become dedicated to raising awareness around corn and all of its many, many, many hidden uses and derivatives. As a Mother and a consumer, I have become intolerant to the lack of transparency on our food labels. It seems the more I learn, the less I understand.

Ironically, this is not the first time I’ve come across this notion. The more I learn, the less I understand. I have been studying and practicing Myofascial Release for 10 years. Working directly with The Fascial System in the body, which is also know as Connective Tissue. You can learn more about that here (MyofascialRelease.com). But to make a long story short, the more I learn about how the body has the ability to heal through modalities such as Myofascial Release, the less I understand about traditional about our ‘health care’ model.

Two major systems, agriculture and health care, in my experience, are both grossly flawed. And worse yet, there are very few checks and balances between the two. I can’t imagine how deeply engrossed in the traditional health care system we would be if my daughter continued to eat a diet consisting of obscene amounts of genetically modified corn while having her symptoms ‘treated’ by conventional medicine.

It is true, I have become a little jaded over the past 2 years of navigating this maze. This CORN MAZE, where there is little to no transparency. Where there is a boogey man hiding behind nearly every box, bag and container that line our grocery store shelves. Where guessing what is meant by those long names on an ingredient label is common place. Where going out to eat is a crap shoot with the odds against us. Where eating at home is now safe. Where learning how to prepare a mostly plant based diet is exciting. Where green juice and smoothies are standard. Where feeling healthy is the reward. Where growing our own food in the summer is fun and challenging. Where coming to understand that those who regulate our food, from growth to processing, do not have the consumers best interest at stake.

I have directly experienced that the connection between food and health are intricately intertwined, especially when there is an allergy or sensitivity involved. It is a complex maze with incomplete answers to navigate through. I would have never imagined ‘sweet summertime corn on the cob’ to be such an ambiguous invader of even seemingly healthy foods.

I see this corn maze like a giant web, tangled and twisted with dark hidden places. It needs light and transparency. It needs to be untangled. It desperately needs attention and awareness. My intention is to do that, here, on this website.

I am Autumn’s Mom. And on behalf of her story and her health, I feel I would be doing a disservice by keeping this information to myself.

What’s in a LABEL?

What’s in a LABEL?

There is so much more to a ‘label’ than understanding a list of ingredients contained in a package. SO MUCH! A label, similar to a diagnosis, can also be given to a person to define a set of symptoms. It is affixed on to something to describe ‘what is inside’. A label is a belief…

Corn and Politics??

Oh my, my, my. This corn thing is really a tricky subject to digest… no pun intended. No wonder. I am curious about…

To Understand Corn is to Know GMO!

To Understand Corn is to Know GMO!

Ultimately, my goal in creating this blog, is to increase awareness around the vast use of corn in our food, beauty products and environmental products; and even more importantly, have it become more commonly recognized as an allergen. Less than a year ago, when Autumn had a visit with an allergist, he explained to me…

Uncertainty and Confusion

Uncertainty and Confusion

With regard to shedding a little light on the corn ingredients and derivatives list, I will start by saying it is very difficult to gain complete understanding due to the lack of transparency. Just knowing it will be confusing and uncertain at best, may take a little frustration out of the process. Whether you are…

Corn 101: It’s In Everything!

As this is just the beginning of sorting through and compiling this information in a relatively organized format, where lies the best starting point is yet to be determined. Yesterday was Christmas. The holidays are…
